The Play Mat Your Baby Lives On — Natural Latex, Not Plastic Foam.
Most play mats — including the very expensive ones — are mostly made of petroleum-based materials like EVA foam and PVC. They either shed microplastics or off-gas formamide. Ours is natural latex, naturally extracted from rubber-tree sap, meaning zero microplastics and no off-gassing. It has a soft bamboo & cotton cover — similar to the fabric used in bamboo baby pajamas, but more resistant.
- Natural latex core — so no microplastics
- No EVA, PVC, PFAS, or BPA
- No off-gassing and no chemical smell
- 1.5″ thick — cushions hardwood head-bumps
- Grippy backing so it won't slip on hardwood
- Soft bamboo & cotton cover, machine-washable
- OEKO-TEX® certified
The one surface your baby actually lives on
Mouthing it, breathing against it, hours a day.
Most mats are PVC or EVA foam
EVA foam
This is the typical interlocking-tile mat. Formamide is a chemical often used in the manufacturing of soft EVA foam. Manufacturers use blowing agents to puff the plastic full of tiny gas bubbles, which is what makes the foam squishy. Over time the foam slowly releases it back out as a vapor — that's off-gassing.
High doses of formamide have been linked to long-term reproductive and developmental harm.
Foam mats can keep off-gassing formamide for their whole life cycle — in a 28-day study, emissions ran about 100× over the EU's air limit.
It isn't regulated just yet. In the US there is no enforceable federal limit on formamide in children's foam mats. A New York bill (the "Formamide-Free Children's Product Act," introduced 2023) was proposed to regulate it, but it's still a proposal, not law. Europe acted on it already: the EU restricted high-formamide EVA foam in children's products back in 2011, and France enforces one of the strictest limits at 200 parts per million (ppm).
PVC mats
This is the typical roll-up mat. Petroleum-based materials, with continuous use (scratching, rubbing), shed microplastics over time — the kind of particles a baby can ingest through ordinary hand-to-mouth contact on the floor.
Natural latex inherently doesn't have this problem, as it comes from rubber trees. It's made of natural polymers, so over time with use it breaks down into organic compounds, not microplastics.
"Non-toxic" claims aren't strictly regulated — you can say non-toxic, but there's no particular standard behind it.
You switched the bottles. You read the snack pouches. The floor was the thing you hadn't fixed yet.
