Professional Series - Celebrating Differences with Melanie Droubay
Hi there! I'm Melanie, wife and mom to 5 beautiful children, including my youngest, Hudson, who is 3. Hudson was born with Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect and had open heart surgery at just 5 months old. Since then, he's been thriving and lighting up our lives with his infectious smile and genuine joy for life. Together, we celebrate every milestone, big or small, and show the world just how beautiful a life with Down syndrome can be.  We hope that by spreading awareness and sharing our journey, we can help build a world where differences aren't only accepted, but celebrated, and where every child is embraced for their unique abilities.

Can you share a bit about Hudson and what makes him unique?

Hudson was born in December 2020 bringing a special kind of magic into our lives.  Hudson has Down syndrome and was born with a congenital heart defect that required surgery at 5 months old.  Despite these challenges, he has been a beacon of light from day one.  His genuine joy for life shines through his extraordinary smiles which he shares generously with everyone he meets.  What sets Hudson apart is his resilience and indomitable spirit.  He faces each day with infectious enthusiasm and a smile that can light up even the darkest room.  Hudson's ability to find wonder and delight in the simplest moments reminds us all of the profound beauty of life.  He teaches us daily about strength, determination and the power of unconditional love.

What has been the most rewarding part of advocating for Hudson and others with Down syndrome?

The most rewarding part of advocating for Hudson and others with Down syndrome has been the connections I've made with other moms who are on similar journeys. There’s something so special about being able to support each other and share in the ups and downs. Seeing the shift in how people view our kids, and knowing that Hudson’s story is helping to create a more understanding and inclusive world, is what makes it all worth it. Watching other families feel more hopeful and empowered because of our journey has been one of the biggest blessings.

How can communities and individuals better support and include those with Down syndrome?

Communities and individuals can better support and include those with Down syndrome by embracing the idea that every person, regardless of their abilities, has unique value to offer. Inclusion begins with simple actions—like creating accessible spaces, promoting inclusive education, and teaching our kids that differences are a normal and beautiful part of our world. On a personal level, being open-minded, patient, and willing to learn from others with different experiences can make a huge difference.  Kindness and acceptance go a long way in making sure that individuals with Down syndrome feel welcome and valued in every space.

Can you share a memorable moment where you saw Hudson overcome a challenge and how it impacted you?

One of the most memorable moments was when Hudson took his first independent steps. It was a milestone we had been working toward for so long, with countless therapy sessions and lots of encouragement. When he finally did it, I felt an overwhelming mix of pride, joy, and relief. Watching him overcome this challenge reminded me of his incredible strength and resilience. It also showed me that progress doesn’t always come quickly, but when it does, it’s worth every bit of effort and patience. That moment reinforced my belief that, with the right support, Hudson can achieve anything he sets his mind to.

How has being Hudson’s mom changed your perspective on life and parenting?

Being Hudson’s mom has completely transformed my perspective on life and parenting. I've learned to slow down and truly appreciate the small moments, celebrating every milestone, no matter how big or small. Hudson has taught me that life isn't about reaching goals quickly, but about the joy and growth that come from the journey itself. Parenting him has made me more patient, compassionate, and understanding. It’s also shifted my focus from what society expects to what really matters—love, connection, and embracing every child for who they uniquely are. Hudson has shown me that differences are something to be celebrated, and that true strength comes in many forms.
